When he won the Liberal leadership race in March, Mark Carney's first act as Prime Minister was to kill the consumer carbon tax.
Conceding that the charge had become "too divisive" among Canadians, Carney took it upon himself to do what Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre had been promising for years: axe the tax.
During the election campaign that followed, Poilievre repeatedly claimed that Carney was being sneaky — and that if elected, the Liberals would immediately reinstate the controversial tax.
On April 25, three days before Election Day, Carney joined our Inside the Village podcast for an in-depth interview at Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie. We asked the PM, point blank, if the consumer carbon tax was truly dead.
“Of course," he replied. "Why would I cancel it and change it? It’s the most desperate argument.”
Carney pointed out that Poilievre grilled him about the same topic during the federal leaders' debate.
"We were deep in the debate, and it’s ‘Justin this’ and ‘carbon tax that,’ " Carney said. "I’m like: ‘Listen, I know you’ve been campaigning for three years on Justin Trudeau and the carbon tax, but they’re both gone. Dude, they’re gone. It’s over. You gotta get a new focus.’ ”
