Hours after winning a minority Parliament, Liberal Leader Mark Carney spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump — and is poised to meet with him in person eventually.
The Prime Minister's Office posted a readout of a Tuesday chat between the pair, following Carney’s Monday evening victory that saw his Liberals secure a fourth consecutive mandate.
“The leaders agreed on the importance of Canada and the United States working together — as independent, sovereign nations — for their mutual betterment. To that end, the leaders agreed to meet in person in the near future,” it added.
It remains unclear when that in-person gathering will happen.
The notice came after Carney promised in his victory speech to make it clear during talks with Trump on a security and economic partnership that Canada has “many” other partners it can cosy up to in the face of U.S. trade aggression.
Earlier on election day, Trump seemed to taunt Canadians with a social media post calling on voters to elect him and become the 51st U.S. state.
The leaders' call also came the same day Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet said he’s willing to work with Carney in a “fragile” minority Parliament on issues that include Canada's response to Trump.
